Your Questions Answered: Which device for reading in bed?
With the arrival of August on vacation and half the comments on Network blogs have become more rare (but do not misunderstand us, free time there very little left of email, contacts and post comments to Twitter and Facebook ;-)).
The interest in the ebook reader is not failed and there is always someone who is preparing to enter the world of digital reading. And 'the case of one of our followers on Twitter that with two very short lines of contact for all of us asking for advice.
'Sixties, great player,
I wear glasses and I suffer from insomnia so I read only in bed.
A welcome suggestion

"Mr. A." does not specify what kind of documents or printed books to read - which we would recommend at least the size of the screen the ebook reader - but the fact that reading takes place mostly in bed and sometimes, say, in low light conditions - as might be to an environment with the only lighted lamp shade - does not exclude the use of a device with LCD screen. In such a situation it might be more appropriate to a tablet that a color electronic ink ebook reader.
These two devices have very different displays: the LCD screen is backlit and glossy, but is also visible in the dark is less suitable for prolonged reading and viewing in bright or outdoor environments, where the screen instead of ink Electronic (e-ink), just as it was designed for, gives his best.
To enhance the experience of reading in low light conditions some producers ebook reader (see Sony or Amazon) sell small enclosures with built-in reading lights that provide adequate lighting to the screen of the device.
For example, this is the case for his proposal by Sony PRS-650
The
the price is 49 euros, which is not negligible especially when added to the device (250 euros).
There are other aspects that must be taken into account and which fall within the classic pros and cons of a device relative to each other. Let's see them quickly:
- Screen size
The tablets usually have a screen size between 7 and 10 inches, while the most popular e-ink ebook readers are those with 6-inch screen. The latter have a very small footprint, can be transported easily and are more than enough to comfortably read ebooks in the epub format of fiction that, at least at this moment, is what has established itself among the leading Italian online bookstores. Larger screens but can be particularly useful for reading eBooks, digital magazines and technical documentation in PDF format A4.
- Weight
A tablet has a weight of not less than 500 grams (many are around 600/700 grams), which could only result in you if you should take the tablet in your hand for a long time. It is no case for the Apple iPad is possible to buy a carrying case that doubles as a support. The e-ink devices, but are "lightweights" that rarely exceed 250 grams and can be used with one hand.
- Features
The live internet standing, sitting or lying down is the purpose of the tablet, multi-function devices capable in certain areas also replace the PC. In addition to reading an ebook in short we do much more.
The e-ink devices are certainly more limited, almost seem born for subtraction from a tablet. Despite the latest ebook reader devices have come on the market a little more versatile (see Nook) their main function is still to put you in a position to read exactly as if he was doing it on a paper book.
- Types of electronic ink displays
As we have seen there are 3 types. Own experience we would like to recommend a device with E-Ink screen "Pearl" because it is less gray than the E-Ink screen "Vizplex" and SiPix.
In short, as always there is an optimal solution but, fortunately, the technology provides us with a range of possibilities. It's up to everyone to find their own solution based on what are their needs.
As always, the call is to share in the comments to the post because your experience may be helpful to our followers and many other blog readers. We therefore await your opinions on it (and then detach from the deck and go looking for an internet point on the boardwalk, there will also be no, or are already victims of the digital divide?).
